My initial mechanical ventilation setup on the Carefusion Avea

DSC_0926 Avea initial setup

This is my initial ventilator setup on the Carefusion Avea.

Pressure Assist Control mode copes with almost any non-asthmatic patient.

Simply titrate the Inspiratory Pressure to get a Tidal Volume of 6ml/kg.

And then, over time, down titrate Inspiratory Pressure to keep VT 6ml /kg, down-titrate FiO2 to keep SpO2 91-94%, and decrease the (minimum) Breath Rate to 6 and allow the patient to set their own breathing rate.

That will get most patients through the night.

Shock management

Shock is a state of haemodynamic failure, where there is inadequate delivery of oxygenated blood to the vital organs, resulting in their failure.
If enough organs fail, the organism dies.
Managing shock states can be complex.
We will explore the types of shock, and some pointers on management, over the next few posts.
